1. Gather Ingredients 

Gather your rye whiskey or bourbon, sweet vermouth, Angostura bitters, and garnishes (maraschino cherry or orange twist).

2. Chill your glass  

Place a coupe or martini glass in the freezer or fill it with ice water to chill while you prepare the cocktail.

3. Measure and pour the whiskey 

Using a jigger or a shot glass, measure out 2 ounces of rye whiskey or bourbon and pour it into a mixing glass or cocktail shaker.

4. Add the sweet vermouth 

Measure out 1 ounce of sweet vermouth and add it to the mixing glass or shaker with the whiskey.

5. Dash in the bitters 

Add 2 or 3 dashes of Angostura bitters to the mixing glass or shaker. These bitters add depth and complexity to the cocktail.

6. Add Ice

Fill the mixing glass or shaker with ice cubes. You can use regular ice cubes or large, solid ice cubes for slower dilution.

7. Stir or shake 

Stir the ingredients in the mixing glass with a bar spoon for about 30 seconds to chill and properly dilute the drink. Alternatively, if you prefer a more aggressive chilling and dilution, you can shake the mixture in a cocktail shaker for about 15 seconds.

8. Serve 

Remove the chilled glass from the freezer or empty it of ice water. Using a cocktail strainer, strain the mixed Manhattan cocktail into the chilled glass. If desired, garnish the drink with a maraschino cherry or a twist of orange peel. Enjoy your classic Manhattan cocktail!
