1. Preheat the Oven

Start by preheating your oven to the temperature specified in your recipe. Typically, this would be around 350°F (175°C).

2. Prepare the Skillet

Choose a cast-iron skillet that's appropriately sized for your cookie. You'll want one that's oven-safe and has been well-seasoned to prevent sticking. Lightly grease the skillet with butter or cooking spray to ensure the cookie doesn't stick to the pan.

3. Prepare the Dough

Mix together your cookie dough ingredients in a large bowl. This typically includes flour, sugar, butter, eggs, baking soda, salt, and any additional mix-ins like chocolate chips, nuts, or dried fruit. Be sure not to overmix the dough, as this can lead to a tougher cookie.

4. Spread the Dough

Once the dough is mixed, spread it evenly into the prepared skillet. You can use a spatula or your hands to press it down firmly and evenly.

5. Bake the Cookie

Place the skillet in the preheated oven and bake according to the recipe instructions. This will typically take around 20-25 minutes, but be sure to keep an eye on it as baking times can vary depending on your oven and the thickness of the cookie.

6. Check for Doneness

The cookie is done when the edges are golden brown and the center is set. You can test this by inserting a toothpick into the center – if it comes out clean or with just a few crumbs attached, it's ready.

7. Cool Slightly

Once the cookie is done baking, remove it from the oven and let it cool in the skillet for a few minutes. This will help it set and firm up slightly before serving.

8. Serve and Enjoy

After cooling slightly, you can slice the skillet cookie into wedges or squares and serve it warm with a scoop of ice cream, a drizzle of caramel or chocolate sauce, or simply enjoy it on its own. It's best enjoyed fresh out of the oven when it's still warm and gooey!
