1. Gather Ingredients

You'll need bourbon or rye whiskey, sugar (traditionally a sugar cube), Angostura bitters, orange peel (for garnish), and optionally, a maraschino cherry.

2. Prepare Glass

Take a rocks glass (also known as an Old Fashioned glass) and add the sugar cube to the bottom. If you don't have a sugar cube, you can use simple syrup instead.

3. Add Bitters

Pour a few dashes of Angostura bitters onto the sugar cube. The amount can vary depending on your taste preferences, but typically around 3 dashes is used.

4. Muddle

Using a muddler or the back of a spoon, gently crush the sugar cube and mix it with the bitters. This helps to dissolve the sugar and release its flavor.

5. Add Whiskey

Pour 2 ounces of bourbon or rye whiskey into the glass over the muddled sugar and bitters. Stir briefly to combine the ingredients.

6. Add Ice

Fill the glass with ice cubes. You can use regular ice cubes or large, slow-melting ice cubes depending on your preference.

7. Stir

Stir the cocktail gently for about 15-20 seconds to chill it and further dilute the drink slightly.

8. Serve

Finally, express the oils from an orange peel over the drink by gently squeezing it over the glass, then rub the rim with the peel before dropping it into the glass as a garnish. Optionally, you can also add a maraschino cherry for extra sweetness and decoration.
