Pork Carnitas Tacos Recipe

Step 1: Ingredients  

Gather all the ingredients you'll need, including pork shoulder or butt, garlic, onion, orange juice, lime juice, cumin, oregano, bay leaves, salt, pepper, and tortillas. Optional toppings include diced onions, cilantro, salsa, avocado, and lime wedges.

Step 2: Prep the Pork  

Trim excess fat from the pork shoulder or butt and cut it into large chunks. Season the pork generously with salt and pepper.

Step 3: Sear the Pork  

Heat a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add a tablespoon of oil, then sear the pork pieces on all sides until browned. This step helps develop flavor and texture.

Step 4: Add Flavorings 

Once the pork is seared, add minced garlic, diced onion, orange juice, lime juice, cumin, oregano, and bay leaves to the skillet. Stir to combine, making sure the pork is coated with the flavorful mixture.

Step 5: Slow Cook 

Cover the skillet or Dutch oven and reduce the heat to low. Let the pork simmer gently for 2-3 hours, or until it's tender and easily shreds with a fork. Stir occasionally and add more liquid (water or broth) if needed to prevent it from drying out.

Step 6: Shred the Pork 

Once the pork is cooked through and tender, remove it from the skillet and transfer it to a cutting board. Use two forks to shred the meat into smaller pieces. Discard any large pieces of fat or connective tissue.

Step 7: Crisp the Meat  

Return the shredded pork to the skillet or Dutch oven and increase the heat to medium-high. Cook the pork, stirring occasionally, until it begins to crisp up and develop a golden brown color. This step adds texture and flavor to the carnitas.

Step 8: Assemble Tacos 

Warm the tortillas either in a skillet or microwave. Spoon the crispy pork carnitas onto the warmed tortillas and top with your favorite toppings such as diced onions, cilantro, salsa, avocado slices, and a squeeze of lime juice. Serve immediately and enjoy your delicious pork carnitas tacos!
