1. Preparation  

Gather all the ingredients you'll need. For a basic skillet shepherd's pie, you'll need ground meat (traditionally lamb, but beef or turkey can be used), vegetables (like onions, carrots, and peas), mashed potatoes, broth, and seasonings like salt, pepper, and herbs.

2. Preheat the skillet 

Preheat your skillet over medium heat. You can use a cast-iron skillet for best results, as it helps to evenly distribute heat.

3. Cook the meat 

Add the ground meat to the skillet and cook it until it's browned and no longer pink, breaking it apart with a spatula as it cooks. Drain off any excess fat if necessary.

4. Add vegetables 

Add chopped onions, carrots, and any other desired vegetables to the skillet with the cooked meat. Sauté them until they're tender, usually about 5-7 minutes.

5. Seasoning  

Season the mixture with salt, pepper, and any herbs or spices you like. Common choices include thyme, rosemary, and Worcestershire sauce for extra flavor.

6. Add broth 

Pour in some broth (beef or vegetable) to add moisture and flavor to the filling. Stir everything together and let it simmer for a few minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

7. Top with mashed potatoes 

Spoon the mashed potatoes over the top of the meat and vegetable mixture in the skillet, spreading them out evenly with a spatula. You can either use store-bought mashed potatoes or make your own.

8. Bake 

Transfer the skillet to the oven and bake the shepherd's pie at 375°F (190°C) for about 20-25 minutes, or until the mashed potatoes are golden brown and the filling is bubbly. Once done, let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
